Sheri Kretzschmar is a full-time nurse and health educator who has dedicated many years to serving in Guatemala. After working as a nurse in Winston-Salem, NC for many years she felt a calling to serve in a particularly Christian way by using her medical knowledge and love of people. In 2009 she moved to Chichicastengo, Guatemala and works with a small team of health care providers, missionaries, and local Christians to provide a variety of health-related services in the surrounding communities.
Several days per week they travel to outlying communities and provide a variety of care to locals in that area. Over time they have helped establish several congregations in the countryside and use those as a base of operations. Services include a variety of health services such as urgent medical care and health maintenance and monitoring of chronic conditions. Several times per year medical mission groups visit to provide surgical and dental care in mobile clinics. Sheri and her team organize and facilitate those services.
Other important care is provided for health education, providing basic instruction on diet, healthy living and eating, pregnancy and prenatal care for expectant mothers, and food for young children and families. They provide water filters for entire communities who suffer from chronic disease related to unclean water. In all, these services are provided in a Christ-centered approach where the gospel is spoken and acted upon throughout every encounter. God is glorified as illness is relieved and education and provided. It is our prayer that we will share the love of God and demonstrate the compassion of Jesus.
